Haven’t posted for while, but the chances are that if you are reading this you are doing so for a quick laugh (therefore you won’t really care about why I haven’t), so I won’t bore you with the ins and outs.

So I don’t know where this has come from but lately it has come to my attention that many people are calling themselves ‘Geeks’. Like its somehow cool.

Now back when the term was coined (along time ago when horses pulled carts), probably by some beefy-headed ‘Jock’ in America, it was to ridicule people. Being a Geek means enjoying studying, and studying in any sense is considered uncool by many (may I point out that if studying were that bad then why did you pick certain subjects at school and college over others, you must have enjoyed them to some extent).

If this term was created to ridicule then the group it is targeted at was different from the norm (a sort of tightly formed obscure group) which I assume was the mainstream kids or/and indeed the jocks.

It is a derogatory term, so why do people call themselves it as if it is not only cool but also socially acceptable? Well just look at the previous sentence, Geeks are different from the norm, and as we know people like to think they are different from everyone else when in fact they are very much the mainstream. I can’t stress this enough, its okay to be mainstream. The mainstream is just a set of norms and values that just about all of us follow.

This however is not the part that really gets my blood boiling. No, the part that really puts the icing on the cake is when giggling waste of space people who can barely read (those of you who are more ‘street’ then I may refer to these people as ‘Wastemanz’), refer to themselves as Geeks. Well as you may have already guessed, I have a few things to say about that .

1. You probably think that Stephen Fry is the worlds cleverest man, if not you probably think “that weird guy in the wheelchair” is.

2. You probably think Pythagoras is some kind of pizza topping, and Pythagoras’s theorem is a BBC Sci-fi series.

3. Just because you can use a computer does not make you a Geek. Computers contain a series of programmes developed to help you, not present a challenge

4. Just because you do A-level English literature and are therefore required to read for your coursework does not make you a Geek.
